The unipolar stepper motor drive circuit is shown in the figure below. It usually uses four transistors to drive the two phases of the stepper motor. Therefore, it is often called “four-phase motor”. This is easily understood as it has four phases, but it actually has only two phases, so this name is confusing, and its precise statement should be “dual phase six-wire stepper motor”, which can be explained by two Phase, and connected to the outside through six lines.

The bipolar stepper motor drive circuit is shown in the figure below. It usually uses eight transistors to drive the two phases of the stepper motor. It uses twice as many transistors as the unipolar stepper motor drive circuit. The four transistors below are driven directly by the microcontroller, while the four transistors above require additional upper driver circuitry. This type of drive circuit not only does not require a clamp circuit, but also can drive four-wire stepper motors and six-wire stepper motors at the same time.
